- Will it track multiple accounts? Most of us have at least a checking and savings account. You might even have multiple checking accounts.
- Is it an online program or does it run on your computer? If it is online, then you can have access anywhere you can get an Internet connection.
- Can the software automatically retrieve transactions from your online accounts? This will save you much time and error in entering expenses.
- Can you assign income and expenses to categories? These can be used to budget using the popular envelope budgeting method.
- Can you compare budgeting versus actual expenses? This will allow you to track how you are doing in your budget and make necessary changes.
- Does it have the reports that you want? A good budgeting software program should provide a number of reports. See if it has the ones that you would be interested in.
- Can it help you prepare for future expenses? Some expenses aren’t done each month, like car registration, which is annually. Good software will have the capability to allow you set aside money regularly to allow you to pay those bills when they are due.
- Does it look like something you would use? If it doesn’t, do buy it. There is no budgeting software program that it worth it if you aren’t going to use it, no matter how many features it has.
