Making More Money, Part 2

If you want to get out of debt, you have to be realistic and flexible. That is, the main reason that you think about getting a part-time job but never actually attempt to get one is pride. It’s the old “what will my friends think if they see me working here?” syndrome. But have you ever heard the saying “pride goeth before the fall”? Your pride may keep you from doing what is necessary to help your family. Which is more important? If you say your pride is more important then your family is to you, then your spouse better start thinking about other relationship options! And if you think working at a part-time job would be embarrassing, how would you feel about having to file bankruptcy? If you still feel you cannot do this, how about getting a part-time job in another town? You might have to commute 20 miles each way, but the chances of running into anyone you know are very slight.

Or is your reason for not doing what is necessary a matter of too little time? Again, you have to decide which is more important to you. Is it better for you and your family if you work longer hours for just one year or continue to deprive you and your family of some simple pleasures that you cannot possibly afford with your debt hanging over your head? The time is always there. It is just a matter of whether you will use the time you have in life to your best advantage or come to your dying day adding up how much time you spent in front of the TV set.

Are you happy with your current full-time job? If not, this would be a great time to try some other type of work. Do you love your current job but want to advance more? This is the right opportunity to learn new skills to help you go on to bigger and better things. That is, if you have to get a part-time job, try to get something you will like and will probably even be of benefit to you in more ways then just the extra pay check.

If your regular job taxes your brain power all day, maybe it would be relaxing to just stock shelves and not have to think so hard. If you are working as a bookkeeper where you do not have much public contact (and dislike bookkeeping anyway), now is the time to try something different like sales where you can work with lots of other people. Maybe you have a nice job that you like but your passion is cars. Then how about working as a part-time mechanic or car salesperson? In other words, look at all the options in the Sunday paper classified section, and dare to try something new. You might even find that you are really good at this new occupation plus you really like doing it and now you have a whole new career.
