You might sometimes wonder why some check suppliers include free shipping and others do not, and what does that mean to you the customer? The answer falls into two distinct areas.
1. What is the effect of this on the retailer?
2. What is the impact on you the buyer?
Firstly the retailer. There are two reasons he may be offering online checks with free shipping.
The first is that he has already wrapped the shipping cost in the price and therefore you are paying it anyway. That is very common, but it is good sales psychology. Nobody is any worse off, and yet the buyers feel they have a bargain.
The second reason is that he may be running a campaign to recruit new customers and is taking the view that if he shoulders the cost of delivery, he will more than get this back over the years as you continue to use him for your bank checks.
And now the impact on the buyer. This also is twofold.
Firstly, if the price is already included in the cost of the checks when you order them there will be no immediate effect on your order beyond perhaps the “feel good” factor as you perceive you have a bargain!
Secondly – and this is more problematic, it may cause your delivery time to be slower. The reason is simple. If the retailer is carrying the cost, rather than passing it on to you visibly or invisibly, he will probably not use the fastest and more expensive means of shipping. He may, buy he also may not, and you need to establish that at the point of order. If you want a faster delivery you may be asked to pay a supplement.
