Why Budgeting is Hard

November 11th, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized — Finance Author

If you’re like me, it’s hard to get started with budgeting. You know that it is something you should do, but you just put it off. There are several possible reasons for this.

  1. You have tried budgeting before and failed. Perhaps you had a bad experience. The method you chose didn’t work. You found yourself deeper in the hole. Now you are afraid that the same thing will happen again and you think why try?
  2. If money s tight, it may be discouraging seeing the state of your finances. Few things can make it harder to look at your money and seeing that it’s hard to pay the bills. It seems like it would be easier to ignore the problem. It’s kind of like the ostrich with its head in the sand.
  3. It takes too much time. Sure it takes some time, but can you think of a better way to spend your time than on your finances.

In order to be successful in budgeting, you need a method that it proven to work, will help you get a handle on your finances, and doesn’t take too much time. Imagine how it will be when you see progress in your finances, like some money in the bank, your debts decreasing, on living paycheck to paycheck anymore.

Any method will require sacrifice and discipline. Half the battle is being able to see results. Half the battle is not getting discouraged. Half the battle is feeling good about what you are accomplishing. It is then easier to sacrifice and have discipline.

Envelope Budgeting is a proven method to help you budget. It doesn’t take a lot of time, is easy to do, and you will see results if you sacrifice and have discipline. See EnvelopeBudgeting.Info for a great tool to help with your budgeting.

Envelope budgeting is how I started doing personal budgeting several years ago. I started off using traditional envelopes and quicken software, but quickly graduated to MVelopes which after a month or so not only replaced my paper envelopes, but quicken as well. It makes it easy to switch and adjust balances across envelopes and the reporting is great. Great blog, you have here. A lot of personal finance information carries over into business finance as well. Keep up the great work!
